Finding your niche in the Creator Economy

Published almost 2 years ago • 1 min read

Hey Reader,

It's finally spring here in Boise, and what a game changer. So much easier to feel motivated and optimistic when the sun is shining. We're also starting to book travel for our team retreat in August and anticipating most of the team being together in person is so exciting!

CREATOR STORIES

The 4 lives of heavyweight pro boxer Ed Latimore

Have you read Ed's creator story yet? It's so good. Here are a few excerpts I love:

He was always writing. At bootcamp, he would hand-write blog posts and newsletters in a notebook propped up on his bed in the barracks; he’d tear off those pages and mail them to a friend who typed them up and posted them on Ed’s blog.

That dedication and passion to share his thoughts is a huge part of why he was successful. Finding a way to keep creating, in spite of serious obstacles, is a hallmark of a successful creator.

After a few years of writing every week, his blog took off. He made money from ads and wrote and sold books like Sober Letters to My Drunken Self and Not Caring What Other People Think is a Superpower. He also started getting paid to speak, and his email newsletter grew by the thousands.

The important part there is the weekly writing for a few years. It can be so easy to skip to the success part, but without that consistent work, he wouldn't have made it!

FROM THE PODCAST

Kaya Yurieff - Finding your niche in the creator economy

In this episode I’m joined by Kaya Yurieff. She is the Creator Economy Newsletter writer for The Information. It’s the publication I read when I want to know what’s going on in startups and funding, learn about Spotify’s latest launch, find out what’s going on with Instagram, and things like that.

We talk about her writing process and her system for publishing four days a week. We talk about how they’ve grown the newsletter and what they pay attention to for monetization. We also talk about what it means to be a creator through crises like the pandemic, the social justice issues of the last few years, and now the war in Ukraine.

P.S. It's the last chance to grab tickets to Craft + Commerce in 2.5 weeks. I'd love to see you there!
